The Chicago Cubs have proven this offseason that they are looking to win this season by making a few ‘win now’ moves.
Adding stars like Kyle Tucker and Ryan Presley certainly indicates that is the case.
The Cubs have also been named as one of the teams reported to be in on All-Star free agent Alex Bregman who is also a proven winner and he would further upgrade the Cub’s roster to increase their chances of making the postseason.
Another example of those ‘win now’ moves was signing utility man Jon Berti to be a key member of the Cubs bench.
The versatile utility man
Berti made his debut with the Toronto Blue Jays where he only appeared in four games. Berti then found his way to the Miami Marlins by signing with them as a free agent and spent the next five years of his career with them.
Berti spent last season with the New York Yankees after he was traded over from the Marlins back in March of 2024. Berti only played in 25 games with the Yankees last season after suffering a left calf strain in May.
Berti did show out in those 25 games by hitting .273/.342/.318 for an OPS of .661 and an OPS+ of 90. That small sample size was good enough to land him a one-year $2 million contract with the Cubs for this season.
Berti joined the Chicago Cubs to win
The 35-year-old Berti, said I’m a recent interview with Marquee Sports Network that he signed with the Cubs “to be a part of a winning organization.
“I’ve always felt like I’m a winning player and want to be a part of a winning organization.”

The Cubs are certainly becoming a winning organization once again and adding Berti to be a key force off their bench will help make the Cubs better. Berti can play third base, shortstop, and second base, and can occasionally play a corner outfield spot if you need him to.
Berti’s versatility will be key coming into the season with the Cubs not knowing if Nico Hoerner will be ready to go for Opening Day after having offseason surgery. The Cubs shortstop Danny Swanson also had surgery this offseason and Berti will provide a solid backup for Swanson in case he has a setback.
The Cubs need players with a winning mentality
Having Berti come in with a winning mentality is the energy the Cubs need to start the season off on the right foot.
Having Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly who are proven winners certainly helps, but having the extra jolt of energy won’t hurt.
Berti will be a key member of the Cubs roster this year and will hopefully be a major reason why they make the playoffs this year.
