The regular season is a few weeks away and with spring training winding down, the Chicago Cubs have made cuts.
2B Logan Watkins – optioned to Triple-A: Watkins had his moments, but he was obvious not ready for the minors. However, Watkins did receive good major-league experience.
P Trey McNutt – optioned to Triple-A: I thought McNutt pitched alright. I’m still surprised he was cut so early. He could see the majors this year pitching out of relief.
P Brooks Raley – optioned to Triple-A: Raley was inconsistent this spring and a main reason he was sent down.
P Alberto Cabrara – optioned to Triple-A: Cabrera has great stuff, but he gave up a lot of runs this spring. If he can throw strikes, he can be effective. The Cubs are stretching him out and he will start in Triple-A.
P Robert Whitenack – optioned to Double-A: Whitenack did not look great at all. You have to feel sorry for this guy as he was pitching great before he injured his arm. Whitenack is recovering from Tommy John Surgery.
P Nick Struck – re-assigned to minor-league camp: Struck is not ready for the big leagues and it showed. But he did get experience against major league players and hopefully that will only help him in the long run.
OF Matt Szczur – optioned to Double-A: Szczur is always at Cubs camp and is always cut right away. Szczur has yet to stand out.
P Dayan Diaz – re-assign to minor-league camp: I didn’t see much from Diaz and I don’t know how he did. But he didn’t get much action in camp.
C Michael Brenly – re-assign to minor-league camp: I still don’t know why Brenly still gets a non-roster invitee to camp. Bob Brenly isn’t announcing the Cubs anymore and Brenly isn’t that good.
P Barret Loux – re-assign to minor-league camp: Loux didn’t have a great spring and has a lot to work on. He’s expected to start the season in Triple-A.
The Cubs spring roster currently stands at 52 players, but the 4th round of cuts will happen tomorrow. Dale Sveum said at least 10 players will be sent down and the players that will stay in camp have a chance at making the team. Javier Baez, Jorger Soler and Christian Villanueva will be among the cuts tomorrow.
