Jason Hammel will officially return to the Chicago Cubs.
Today the Cubs and Hammel agreed to a 2-year deal worth $20 million which includes a club option for 2017. Hammel gives the Cubs another back end starter for the rotation this season.
Hammel returns to the Cubs after the team traded him and Jeff Samardzija last July to the Oakland Athletics for prospects Addison Russell, Billy McKinney and Dan Straily. The Cubs signed Hammel to a one-year deal last offseason before trading him.
The 32-year-old Hammel had a 8-5 record in 17 starts with the Cubs last season and a 2.98 ERA, the lowest of his career. Hammel struggled with the A’s however, going just 2-6 with a 4.26 ERA in 12 starts.
