Chicago Cubs utility infielder Javier Baez can probably rest easy.
According to a report by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal on Monday states that the Cubs likely won’t include Javier Baez in any future trades. The Cubs have been linked to a few different relievers with Baez, Jorge Soler and even Kyle Schwarber as names being mentioned as trade assets.
But not so fast.
Javier Baez is not as mature a hitter as Schwarber at 23 — he still walks too little, strikes out too much. But Baez’s power potential from the right side is as intriguing as Schwarber’s is from the left. And for different reasons, he would be nearly impossible for the Cubs to trade.
The 23-year-old Baez is slashing .267/.305/.445 with the Cubs this season. In 154 plate appearances, Baez has 6 home runs and 19 RBI’s but has been fantastic with the defense.
Baez’s versatility allows Joe Maddon to play him at any infield position, giving the manager a valuable asset to the lineup.
As the hot stove heats up and the Cubs likely attempt to improve their bullpen, don’t expect Baez’s name to be thrown around a lot.
