The Chicago Cubs have done a lot of roster-building this off-season by adding key players such as Kyle Tucker, Ryan Pressly, Matthew Boyd, Cody Poteet, Colin Rea, Jon Berti, and Vidal Brujan. They also were in the running for significant players like star third baseman Alex Bregman and pitching phenom Roki Sasaki.
Despite Spring Training being underway, manager Craig Counsell recently told Patrick Mooney at The Athletic that, “roster-building never ends.” In context, the Cubs are specifically exploring adding a veteran hitter. One area where the team could use a right-handed bat is at the corner infield spots and Justin Turner has been someone that they are seriously considering.
A current look at the Chicago Cubs corner infield positions

At first base, Michael Busch is the clear favorite to play near everyday. The left-handed slugger was in that role a season ago, but behind him there is no obvious backup option. Alexander Canario, who has only played outfield throughout his career, is someone who is getting reps at first base during Spring Training along with Jonathan Long and Jon Berti.
Across the diamond, prospect Matt Shaw is competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster. Whether he starts the year with the team or not, he’s going to have a significant role for the Cubs at some point in 2025. Other options at the hot corner include Jon Berti and Vidual Brujan.
Justin Turner could backup both infield positions

40 year old Justin Turner has played primarily third and first base throughout his 16 year career. A season ago he was primarily a designated hitter and then played much more first base than third base. Regardless he has the flexibility to play either position, even if his days in the field are a lot less than earlier on in his career.
Other areas that Justin Turner could benefit the Cubs

Outside of backing up two defensive positions, Turner could be utilized as a pinch hit option off the bench. He has a career .458 slugging percentage and has been in the double digits for home runs each year since 2015 (excluding the shortened 2020 season).
It will be interesting to see if the veteran infielder signs a MLB deal or not this year, but regardless the Cubs do seem to have serious interest in adding him.
