Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is already a star and has a bright future in MLB.
After winning the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2015, he followed it up with an NL MVP award and a World Series title in 2016. The Cubs have big plans for their third baseman as he’s already become one of the faces of the future.
Although Bryant is a free agent after the 2021 season, the Cubs would love to lock up the 25-year-old to an extension. But it hasn’t happened yet.
They haven’t even discussed that option, according to a new report.
Bryant will make $1.05 million this year, a record for pre-arbitration players, and he could easily get over $100 million on his next contract.
There’s no rush for an extension from either side according to the Chicago Sun-Times’ Gordon Wittenmyer:
“I guess it’s a little early,” Bryant told Wittenmyer. “I still feel super young. I’m still getting used to all of this playing at this level. I’ll listen to whatever they have to say, but I just think that it might be in my best interest to just play it out and see where things go….I’d rather just now focus on baseball and playing and not have any other distractions off the field like that, just because it’ll take away from my play on the field.”
The Cubs have a lot of young talent on their roster and they will want to keep the young star, but going year-to-year makes a lot of sense.
When it’s time to talk the big extension, Bryant will be in for one hell of a payday.
