The Chicago Cubs have lost out on their top free agent target of this offseason.
The Chicago Cubs have been in on the Roki Sasaki sweepstakes all offseason and they just were confirmed as one of the teams who are now out of the running for Sasaki per Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Losing out on Roki Sasaki
It was announced on X earlier today through ESPN’s Jeff Passan, that the Cubs are no longer in the running for superstar free agent Roki Sasaki. Per Passan:
“The finalists for Japanese star right-hander Roki Sasaki are the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays, sources tell ESPN. Sasaki will decide on his team by the closing of his posting window Jan. 23.”
The Cubs losing out on Roki Sasaki is depressing to say the least. Having the 23-year-old Sasaki in a rotation paired with Ace Shota Imanaga and a star in his own right Justin Steele would’ve given the Chicago Cubs one of the best rotations in baseball.
What do the Cubs do now?
Since Roki Sasaki is no longer on the board for the Chicago Cubs, they will look to shift their focus to other pitchers either on the free agent market where Jack Flaherty is still available or move to the trade market as they have been doing and acquire pitchers like the Seattle Mariners Luis Castillo or the Minnesota Twins Pablo Lopez.
