The Chicago Cubs continued their ugly trend of having another third baseman make an error on Wednesday night. Third baseman Jon Berti made an error in the Cubs’ 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in front of 11,297 fans at PNC Park.
Errors are what got Gage Workman DFA’d and traded to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. Workman made an error in his starting debut for the White Sox on Wednesday night.
Since taking Workman out of the lineup, Vidal Brujan made a costly fielding mistake against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday night.
The Cubs began the season with Matt Shaw at third base. He seemed to do well enough on defense, but Chicago sent him down to Iowa after batting .172/.294./241 through his first 58 at-bats in 18 games.
The Chicago Cubs have a Matt Shaw plan at third base

Per Bruce Levine of 670 The Score, the Cubs’ plan at third base is for Shaw to eventually return as a starter.
“The plan that we hear from the Cubs is, ‘We’re waiting for Matt Shaw.’ I don’t believe that’s really the mantra going on in the hallways at Clark and Addison,” Levine said. “I believe that they’re looking for a practical solution to third base, if indeed, Shaw is not ready to play this year.
“I mean, he looks like a guy that has a lot of talent, that eventually is going to hit, but because you have a need for it doesn’t necessarily make him ready to help you win right now.”

The Cubs could be adding a third baseman this summer

While the plan, at least publicly, is for Shaw to return, Levine hinted the Cubs are privately considering adding another third baseman as they make a run for the postseason.
“So this is a win right now team,” Levine said. “Development is a part of it. We saw a lot of it last year with (Pete Crow-Armstrong, with (Miguel Amaya), with (Michael) Bush, some of the pitching as well. Now we’re seeing a team that is ready to try to win a division and go deep in the playoffs, and to have a hole at third base…
“Again, ideally, they get a bullpen guy at the end, they get a third baseman, they get a starting pitcher. How much is that going to cost you, as far as players and money? We don’t know. But you know, looking at their situation over the next two years, this is a time to win.”
After a tough schedule in April, the Cubs are two games up on the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central. They could be up at least a couple more games if they had a solution at third base.
