According to Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com, the Chicago Cubs have non-tender relief pitcher Daniel Bard. The once highly-touted prospect has lost his touch and can’t get his career back on track.
The Cubs picked up Bard off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on September 4th. As the corresponding move, the Cubs designated third baseman Cole Gillespie for assignment. Bard did not throw one pitch for the Cubs when he came over from Boston.
The Cubs did not want to give up on Bard, but he has struggled badly in Winter ball. Instead of taking a chance on him for next season and to save money, the Cubs decided to non-tender him a contract.
With Bard becoming a free agent, the Cubs 40-man roster now stands at 39.
