The Chicago Cubs chances of winning the National League Central title just became a little harder with their division rivals recent acquisition
The Chicago Cubs are one of the teams favored to be at the top of the National League come this season. The Cubs are also set to be on pace to win their first National League Central title since 2020 which is the last time they made the playoffs. However, that pathway could become a lot harder with one of their divisional rival the Cincinnati Reds acquiring second basemen Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Offseason acquisitions
The Cubs have a real chance at capturing their first National League Central title this season since last wining it back in 2020, which is the last time they made the playoffs. Since that time the Cubs elevated Jed Hoyer from being their General Manager to being their President of Baseball Operations.
Since becoming the President of Baseball Ops. Jed Hoyer has complied a roster that should shakeup Major League Baseball come 2025. He’s added two Japanese superstars in potential Cy Young award winner Shota Imanaga and potential All-Star Seiya Suzuki. His biggest acquisition to date was making a blockbuster deal with the Houston Astros to bring in 3x All-Star Kyle Tucker to be the Cubs superstar to possibly build around. These moves can culminate in the Chicago Cubs bringing home the 2025 National League Central banner and possibly more.
Pathway to the National League Central title a little more difficult
The Cubs pathway to the National League Central title just got a little harder however with their divisional rivals the Cincinnati Reds acquire second basemen Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cincinnati Reds have made a few good moves to better their roster this season along with adding Gavin Lux. They made another trade earlier this season with the Kansas City Royals to send them second basemen Jonathan India for right-hander Brady Singer. They also retained starting pitcher Nick Martinez when he ended up accepting the qualifying offer for this year.
With a young rotation lead by Hunter Greene, who could have a big season for them, along with a young core of offensive player lead by their star shortstop Elly Del La Cruz the Cincinnati Reds are slowly becoming a force the Cubs will have to reckon with. Now looking to have both the Milwaukee Brewers and not the Cincinnati Reds looking to give the Cubs tough competition it’s imperative that players like Tucker and Imanaga have big seasons this year.
Can the Chicago Cubs still win?
Given the talent in both veterans and young players yes the Cubs will be a good team in 2025. They just need to stay healthy and have their foundational pieces and their newcomers all hit in order for it to be a magically season for the Cubs. Yes it will be tough now that the Reds will give them a fight, but the Cubs will be ready to face the challenge.
