The Chicago Cubs could have the potential to have one of the best bullpens in the National League with these key pieces and a possible adding more.
The Chicago Cubs could have the potential to finally be a force to be reckoned with in the National League this season after being middle of the pack for the past five years. With all the acquisitions made thus far and the potential for more the Chicago Cubs are in as good a spot as any team to have success in 2025. That success could hinge on whether or not the Cubs have a strong backend of the bullpen for this season.
Adding to the bullpen
Adding to their bullpen was one of the main focuses for the Chicago Cubs this offseason along with adding a superstar, which they did in adding Kyle Tucker, and finding another starter. The Cubs made a strong move this offseason to add left-hander and former Minnesota Twin Caleb Thielbar to give them another lefty option out of the pen.
According to FanGraphs the Cubs backend of the bullpen figures to be a mix of Thielbar , Tyson Miller being the setup men, and with Porter Hodge figuring to be the closer. Now, the Cubs have been rumored to be in the market to sign free agent closer Carlos Estévez, but nothing has happened on that front. Adding Estévez would give the Cubs one of the better bullpens in the league with how locked down he’s been the past few seasons.
What will the rest of Chicago Cubs bullpen look like?
Rounding out the bullpen to go along with Hodge, Miller, and Thielbar will be Keegan Thompson, Eli Morgan, with Nate Pearson Julian Merrywhether, and left-hander Rob Zastryzny all vying for the last spot in the pen.
If the Cubs could add one more late inning and high-leverage reliever, than the Cubs will have success with them needing a strong bullpen to pair with a solid pitching staff and strong offense. If they can have the bullpen step up and be a force for them then the playoffs should be easy for them to make this season.
