The Chicago Cubs have many top prospects who will figure to do some big things for them this season and in the future.
One of their top prospects James Triantos can be something special for the Chicago Cubs whenever they decide to call him up. Triantos is a valuable infielder who can play all the infield spots as well as a little bit of the outfield which adds a lot of value and depth to the Cubs roster.
Ranked as the Cubs’ No. 5 prospect and MLB’s No. 55 prospect James Triantos recently received recognition for how valuable he is.
The Chicago Cubs’ versatile prospect
The 21-year-old James Triantos was the Cubs second-round draft pick during the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft. Recently MLB.com released their list of the best second base prospects in baseball and the young Triantos was named the fifth best second baseman.
When looking at the James Madison High School graduate’s grades the one tool that stands out for Triantos is his hit tool looking to be his best ability with grading at 60/80. With both his arm (55/80) and power (50/80) not being too far behind.
The 5’11” righty will look to turn out to be a solid contact hitter with consistently putting the bat on the ball. Having a similar build and game to that of current Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner, Triantos appears to be on the same trajectory as him. Triantos’ 2024 season was solid with playing 115 games between Double and Triple-A. Logging 23 doubles, 6 triples, 7 HRs, 52 RBI, and 47 stolen bases, with a slash line of .300/.346/.427 for an OPS of .773.
What does 2025 have in store for James Triantos?
Given that the Cubs have needs at third base, possibly second base if Nico Hoerner isn’t ready for Opening Day, and possibly a fourth outfielder Triantos could make his way onto the Cubs roster this season. The Cubs currently have options in Vidal Bruján and Gage Workman who could compete for those jobs, but with how higly regarded Trianots is he could jump both of them on the depth chart if he shows out in Spring Training. FanGraphs projects Triantos to start his season down in Triple-A that way he isn’t riding the bench. However, if Triantos tears it up in the first month which he projects to do, the Cubs might be forced to bring him up.
