The Chicago Cubs didn’t fare well in the injury department. Their number two in the rotation, Justin Steele, will miss the rest of the year due to an elbow injury.
The Cubs have a few options available to fill in and eat his innings, with Colin Rea getting the go, pitching a great game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Another option available for the Cubs is their top prospect, Cade Horton, who is doing well down at Iowa, and Javier Assad, who will join Horton in the Iowa rotation for his rehab stint.
The Chicago Cubs could be getting some reinforcements soon

Assad, starting his rehab stint, couldn’t come at a better time as he will give a jolt of life to the rotation.
The Cubs Triple-A affiliate, the Iowa Cubs, announced that Assad will pitch tonight against the St. Paul Saints.
“Javier Assad is scheduled to pitch tonight vs. the St. Paul Saints and begin his rehab assignment.”

Reinforcements incoming

Assad will be needed more than ever, as the Cub’s depth in the starting pitching department is being tested, and cannot afford another injury.
Assad made 29 starts last season, pitching to a 3.73 ERA and an ERA+ of 107.
Assad’s 147.0 innings will be invaluable, and hopefully, he can get upwards of 160.0 under his belt.
