The Chicago Cubs announced today that they have signed utility man Emilio Bonifacio to a minor league deal.
Bonifacio is at Cubs camp and will look to compete for a roster spot. If Bonifacio makes the team come opening day, he will earn 2.5 million and can make an additional 425,000 in incentives. Bonifacio also has 574,000 coming from the Kansas City Royals.
Cubs manager Rick Renteria said Bonifacio will play some infield and outfield in camp. Renteria likes Bonifacio’s versatility and plus he adds speed if he makes the team.
Jon Heyman of CBSsports.com says Bonifacio had major league offers from teams, but chose the Cubs due to chance of more playing time.
From the looks of it and from reports, Bonifacio has the edge for the 25th spot on the Cubs roster.
