The Chicago Cubs have made it their main mission to add to their pitching depth all season, specifically adding to their bullpen.
The Cubs have added a ton of depth to their bullpen some far with signing guys like former Minnesota Twins lefty Caleb Thielbar to be one of their options. As well as signing both Ben Heller and Phil Bickford to be depth options in case of injury.
The Cubs made yet another mid-level move to add another piece to their bullpen depth after they missed out on top reliever Tanner Scott by bringing another veteran reliever in a minor league deal.
The Chicago Cubs sign veteran reliever to a minor league deal
The Cubs and veteran reliever Trevor Richards have agreed on a minor league deal for this season per Aram Leighton of JustBB Media and the CallUpPod.

Richards, 31, pitched to a 4.55 ERA in 65 1/3 innings with the Blue Jays and Twins last season.

The 31-year-old Richards has pitched for five teams in his short seven-year career in the big leagues. Pitching for the Blue Jays, the Rays, the Marlins, the Brewers, and most recently the Minnesota Twins. Richards 2024 season started with the Toronto Blue Jays but ended with the Minnesota Twins when they traded him to the Twins at last year’s trade deadline.
Richards in 2024 and arsenal
The 6-2 righty had an ok season for both the Blue Jays and Twins making 55 appearances and having a record of 2-2 with a 4.55 ERA with 62 strikeouts in 65.1 innings pitched. Richards is a straight changeup/four-seam fastball guy for his arsenal using his changeup (53.6%) more than his fastball (46.4%).
What does Richards bring to the Cubs?
The Illinois native will add valuable depth to the Cubs roster as well as experience in the middle and late innings of ball games.
Injuries will always happen and in the bullpen, they happen all the time, and having another reliable arm down on the farm to turn to if needed is always a good option to have.
