The Chicago Cubs have been very busy this offseason.
First and foremost, they were able to acquire star outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros. After that, they shipped star outfielder and first baseman Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees.
Outside of those two big moves, the Cubs have focused on making smaller additions. Matthew Boyd was added to help the rotation, but they have brought in a lot of smaller names.
Most recently, as of today, the Chicago Cubs went out and acquired Ryan Pressly from the Astros. He will fill the role of closer for the Cubs.
That being said, they are still very much involved in the free agency market for a star third baseman.
Chicago Cubs ‘Love’ Star Free Agent Third Baseman
As shared by Michael Cerami, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score has reported that the Cubs “love” Alex Bregman. However, they are caught up on the length of the contract he wants.
Via Cerami:
This is live transcribed, so not word for word, but:
“(Alex) Bregman really wanted to come to New York or Chicago….The Cubs don’t have the inclination to go to 5 years,. They love Alex Bregman and they’d love to have him on a 1-3 year situation. Bregman is seen as a $25M/year player at this point.”

Bregman has reportedly been looking for a five-year deal. Chicago, on the other hand, would prefer to sign him to a one to three-year contract.
Jed Hoyer and company do not want to over-commit to an aging player. Bregman is 30 years old and could easily be productive for a five-year deal, but there is no guarantee.
Alex Bregman had a solid year with the Houston Astros in 2024
During the 2024 MLB season with the Astros, Bregman ended up playing in 145 games. He ended up hitting 26 home runs to go along with 75 RBI, while slashing .260/.315/.453. Those numbers would look good for the Chicago Cubs’ lineup.
Matt Shaw is currently projected to end up being the team’s starting third baseman. Bregman would replace him as the starter, but would give the Cubs a much better chance to compete in the National League.
Expect to hear more news about the Chicago Cubs’ interest in Bregman in the coming days. They still have a shot at landing him, but it would take some compromise from the star third baseman.
