The Chicago Cubs are expected to designate relief pitcher Michael Bowden for assignment before tomorrow’s game vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates. As pitcher Matt Garza will will be activated off the 15-day DL. Bowden is out of minor-league options and can’t be sent down without being DFA. He could still stay in the Cubs organization if he clears waivers and accepts the assignemnt to Triple-A Iowa. In my honest opinion, I don’t think Bowden will clear waivers and will be playing for another team shortly. Bowden has had his moments this season and was good to finish out last season.
If you don’t recall, the Cubs acquired Bowden for Marlon Byrd last season. Bowden has not been the Cubs worse relief pitcher this season of whom is still on the roster. Shawn Camp had a good season last season and the Cubs aren’t ready to give up on him. Carlos Marmol makes too much money and the Cubs are hoping they will be able to trade him by the July 31st trade deadline. Hector Rondon is a Rule V pick and if the Cubs were to take him off the big league roster, he’ll go back to his original team and the Cubs are not keen on losing him for sure. However, James Russell, Kevin Gregg and Kyuji Fujikawa have been better than Bowden so far this season. Carlos Villanueva, whom is moving to the Bullpen has been better too. So, that leaves Bowden to the player being DFA.
I would hope Bowden does clears waivers and does get outrighted to Triple-A, but I can’t see that happening. Bowden has a live arm and is a nice player to have in the bullpen.
