The Chicago Cubs will be getting younger in the next couple of years as their farm system stars begin to emerge. Here’s a look at Chicago’s four highest-ranked infield prospects, per MLB.com:
Matt Shaw (No. 1 Prospect)
Shaw continues to impress with his dynamic offensive abilities and steadily improving defense. The 23-year-old right-handed hitter boasts a compact swing that generates consistent hard contact, evidenced by his strong performances in Double-A and Triple-A during the 2024 season, where he batted .284, combined, and hit 21 home runs, with a .379 on base percentage. Shaw demonstrates advanced plate discipline, showing a mature approach that enables him to handle off-speed pitches effectively while maintaining a solid strikeout-to-walk ratio. He has excelled with the bat at every level in the pros.
Defensively, Shaw has moved around a bit and has come short of excelling anywhere. His work ethic and perseverance, however, have led to improvements on the field. He’s currently targeted as a third baseman, although second base may be his best position. On the bases, Shaw combines instinct with speed, making him a threat to steal and take extra bases.
James Triantos (No. 5 Prospect)
Triantos has solidified his reputation as a high-contact hitter with the potential for a well-rounded offensive game. In 2024, the 21-year-old displayed remarkable consistency at the plate, batting a combined .300 at Double-A and Triple-A, with 7 home runs in 485 plate appearances. His excellent bat-to-ball skills and ability to cover the entire plate make him a tough out, while his developing power hints at double-digit home run potential as he continues to mature physically. While his speed is not a standout tool, his instincts on the base paths allow him to capitalize on opportunities, adding value beyond his raw athleticism.
Triantos is mostly an all-bat kind of player, who projects to “average” defensively, no matter where he plays. As of right now, his best spot appears to be second base.
Jefferson Rojas (No. 7 Prospect)
The 19-year-old Rojas gave flashes of his potential last season at High-A with his speed-first game, stealing 21 bases in 96 games. Rojas displays advanced bat control for his age, consistently putting the ball in play with line-drive power to all fields. His plate approach is mature, and as he adds strength, his power numbers are expected to increase, suggesting future 20-homer potential.
Defensively, Rojas is a natural at shortstop with excellent range, smooth actions, and a strong arm. He has the instincts to make challenging plays look routine, and his high baseball IQ is evident in both his positioning and decision-making. On the base paths, Rojas uses his speed effectively, combining it with good reads to be a consistent threat.
Fernando Cruz (No. 8 Prospect)
Cruz, the cousin of former Cub Starlin Castro, has demonstrated a well-rounded game and maturity beyond his years. At just 18 years of age, he presents him self as a more mature presence than prospects at his age and level. Ranked the No. 4 prospect in MLB Pipeline’s 2024 international rankings, Cruz is expected to develop into a high-end major-leaguer with 20+ home run potential and as a multiple-tool asset.
His raw ability and athleticism make him a top prospect despite some initial struggles in rookie ball.
