Going into today’s game, no one thought the Cubs would win as they were facing Stephen Stasburg the Washington Nationals ace and Edwin Jackson was pitching for the Cubs of whom has struggled to start his career with the Cubs. But one mistake by 3B Ryan Zimmerman led to 4 unearned runs knocking Strasburg out of the game. That’s how the Cubs usually lose and it’s nice to see them punish another team for once. The Cubs beat the Nationals 8-2 today in the 2nd game of the 3-game set. The Cubs record now stands at 14-22 on the season.
Winning pitcher: Edwin Jackson (1-5)
Losing pitcher: Stephen Strasburg (1-5)
Save: None
The good: The Cubs punishing another team when they make a mistake. We don’t see the Cubs capitalizing on another teams mistake too much and was nice to see for once. Nats’ Zimmerman made an throwing error in the 5th inning of today’s game that led to 4 of the Cubs 8 earned runs.
The bad: Luis Valbuena left today’s game with a injury and may be out for sometime. He was headed for X-rays. He jammed his pinky and hopefully it’s nothing serious. If he does have to be placed on the DL, Cody Ransom will get the most playing time at 3B and the Cubs will have to call someone up from Triple-A. Sadly, the 1st name that comes to my head is Ian Stewart or possibly Josh Vitters. Stewart is making 2 million and was expected to play 3B this season, but he’s not on the 40-man roster anymore. Vitters would be an interesting name. He’s still on the 40-man roster and is finally playing for Triple-A. If the Cubs were to have to call someone up from Triple-A, it could be Vitters. As I doubt the Cubs would want to add Stewart to the 40-man roster again. Let’s hope that’s the case.
The ugly: When you beat a good baseball team by a good margin and a good pitcher, there is no ugly. Even if a player or players didn’t perform well.
Tomorrow the Cubs will play the Nationals in the rubber match. The game will start at 12:35 p.m. Central and televised on WGN – heard on WGN 720. Scott Feldman will go for the Cubs and Gio Gonzalez for the Nationals.
