The Chicago Fire have acquired forward Jason Johnson from the Houston Dynamo on Monday with full terms of the deal not disclosed.
In exchange for 24-year-old Jamaican international forward, the Fire sent Brazilian midfielder Alex in the deal to Houston. Johnson spent three college seasons at Virginia Commonwealth University, scoring 28 games and earning the 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He was selected 13th overall by the Dynamo in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.
The move makes sense for the fire as Alex couldn’t find playing time and was low on the depth chart for midfielders behind Victor Perez, Razvan Cocis and Michael Stephens. The Brazilian midfielder had 76 appearances in 3 years for the club. He did come up in some big moments for the Fire.
Johnson will now find himself in a mix of talented strikers for the Fire as he looks to fill the void of losing Alex. With the Fire crowded at the position, it will be interesting to see how much Johnson will get used.
Head coach Frank Yallop commented on the trade via press release by the club:
“Jason is a good, young player with a lot of pace and I’m pleased that we’ll be adding him to our roster,” said Fire Head Coach and Director of Soccer Frank Yallop. “I’d like to thank Alex for his time with the club and wish him the best in Houston.”
After being idle again this week, the Chicago Fire will return to the pitch on April 24 when they host NYC FC at Toyota Park.
