The Chicago White Sox received news last week that left-handed pitcher Ky Bush would have to undergo Tommy John surgery and miss this season.
Bush was set to be a big part of the White Sox roster either competing for a spot in the rotation or moving to the bullpen to give the White Sox another left-handed option.
The White Sox placed Bush on the 60-day IL, which cleared a spot on the 40-man roster. In a corresponding move, the White Sox added another pitcher, who they recently claimed off waivers.
The Chicago White Sox add more pitching depth

The White Sox added more pitching depth by claiming right-handed pitcher Owen White off waivers from the New York Yankees. Per the White Sox X account, Bush was placed on the 60-day IL to make room for White.
“The Chicago White Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher Owen White off waivers from the New York Yankees.
To make room for White on the 40-man roster, the White Sox placed left-handed pitcher Ky Bush on the 60-day injured list.”

Adding the 25-year-old gives the White Sox another option for the starting rotation and further adds depth.
What White brings to the White Sox

White was once a former second-round draft pick of the Texas Rangers in 2018 and debuted with the Rangers on June 13, 2023. During his debut, White went 2.0 innings, let up 4 hits, struck out 2, and walked 1, while letting up 3 earned runs and taking the loss against the Los Angeles Angels.
In two seasons with the Rangers, White made five appearances, accumulated a 0-1 record, and had a 16.71 ERA in 7.0 innings pitched. Baseball Savant has White having seven pitches in his repertoire, but primarily using a fastball and a curveball.
White still has some roster flexibility, with one more minor league option available according to FanGraphs.
This is a good move for the White Sox

Even though White hasn’t put up numbers so far in his short career in the big leagues, adding White brings more depth to the roster, which is valuable.
Having one more option available is good, with injuries being a part of baseball, White could see some time moving up and down from Triple-A to the Majors this season.
White could add some value by being a potential swingman for the White Sox if he doesn’t make the starting rotation.
