As the second half of the season gets under way, the Chicago White Sox have a few major decisions on hand. It is no secret that they are in need of another power hitter in the batter’s box and another arm or two in the bullpen.
Names such as Nick Markakis of the Atlanta Braves and Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies have begun to surface, but the South Siders also have options within their own organization.
The injury rehab assignment of Justin Morneau has moved from Triple-A Charlotte to Double-A Birmingham due to Charlotte being on an All-Star break of their own. His White Sox debut could possibly be in the near future, giving Chicago the extra left handed bat they desperately need at this point.
Carson Fulmer will be making his big league debut after being called up from Birmingham. He will make his debut coming out of the White Sox bullpen. Zack Burdi and his 100-mph fastball are also being mentioned more everyday as the White Sox center their focus on the pitching staff and the options they have available.
Burdi was the 26th overall selection in this year’s MLB draft and the right handed reliever just may find himself taking the hill in Chicago this year, especially if the Sox are in any kind of position to make a push for the post season.
While the White Sox consecutive won series streak was brought to an end by Atlanta, they have fought their way back into the possibility of making their first post season appearance since the 2008 season. If any of the talk is going to become a reality, Chicago will need to take advantage of their six-game road trip to Anaheim and Seattle.
Taking 4 or 5 of the games could create a stronger possibility of a few of Chicago prospects making their big league debuts.
