The Chicago White Sox recently designated versatile infielder Jacob Amaya for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster when the club signed utility man Josh Rojas.
Amaya has been designated for assignment four times so far in his career with the White Sox being the most recent of teams to do it to Amaya.
Since being DFA’d, Amaya was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles to add to the many infielders that they currently have on their 40-man roster.
Amaya’s stint with the White Sox
Amaya has had a up and down major league career to say the least. The 26-year-old infielder was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the eleventh round of the 2017 MLB June Amateur Draft from South Hills HS (West Covina, CA. The White Sox picked up Amaya back in August when the Houston Astros designated him for assignment. During his time with the Astros Amaya mostly played in the minor leagues with only making one appearance for the Astros at the big-league level.
Known more for his defense than his offense, for Amaya his minor league career was just pretty average as an offensive player with slashing .251/.353/.389 for an OPS of .742. In just his quick 23-game stint with the White Sox, Amaya was not too impressive, hitting .179/.225/.194 for an OPS and OPS+ of .419 and 23. With Colson Montgomery, Brooks Baldwin, Lenyn Sosa and others higher than Amaya on the depth chart Amaya was expendable.
Claimed by the Baltimore Orioles
Jacob Amaya will now look to try and turn his career around with the Orioles, who claimed Amaya off of waivers per Jake Rill, Orioles beat writer for MLB.com. With Baltimore, Amaya will figure to be a depth piece with their whole infield already covered with stars like Rookie of the Year Gunnar Henderson, All-Star Jordan Westburg, and emerging star the youngster Jackson Holliday. In a corresponding move to make room for Amaya on their roster the Orioles designated right-hander pitcher Roansy Contreras for assignment.
