Champion professional sports teams are built on consistency. Just look at our Chicago Blackhawks or the San Antonio Spurs. Consistency is their calling cards.
If you can consistently do your job, put in the work, function as a team and perform at your highest level as much as possible, your team will be successful. Sadly, the White Sox have been anything but.
The 2015 White Sox have been defined by their inconsistent play. Early in a week they can sweep the AL West leading Houston Astros, but later that same week, get swept by the Tampa Bay Rays. They rarely put up five runs or more, but more often than not, leave their starting pitchers out to dry with minimal run support.
How bad is their hitting?
Entering Wednesday night, the Sox were dead last in the AL in runs scored at 221, a full 140 runs behind the Toronto Blue Jays. You will find them in the bottom three for most AL hitting categories, coming dead last in home runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
Bringing up the rear last in a tough AL Central, the Sox need to strongly consider making big changes before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. Lately, the Sox have either stood pat or traded away vets, such as Jake Peavy or Jesse Crain, for prospects. While guys like Jose Abreu and Chris Sale are virtually untouchable, other valuable position players, or even starters, could be dealt.
Players that are generating some buzz are Alexei Ramirez, Adam Eaton and Jose Quintana. However, according to the ESPN, General Manager Rick Hahn isn’t ready to commit one way or the other.
“I realize and completely understand and have heard from outside the ballpark the frustration.” Hahn said. “We share that frustration. Our focus has to be on what the commitment is inside that clubhouse and their focus, their belief and their efforts to win that ballgame on any given night.
“I will say that since the draft is now behind us, the trade chatter has picked up a little bit over the last several days or week or so,” Hahn said. “That’s certainly going to continue over the next few weeks heading into July.”
If things continue to be as inconsistent as they’ve been, that chatter needs to turn into action soon.
