The former Chicago White Sox Ace gets candid in an interview about being traded to the Boston Red Sox.
Former Chicago White Sox Ace Garrett Crochet who is now with the Boston Red Sox got candid in a new interview about his thoughts on being traded over from the Chicago White Sox.
Garrett Crochet’s Chicago White Sox career
The 25-year-old Garrett Crochet was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the first-round eleventh overall of the 2020 MLB June Amateur Draft. Considered to be the most polished pitcher coming out of college in that year’s draft Crochet quickly ascended through the minor leagues and made his Major League Debut that same season for the Chicago White Sox pitching in one inning with two strikeouts on September 18th, 2020, against the Cincinnati Reds.
The University of Tennessee product started his career as a reliever but was quickly turned into a starter with the level of stuff he possesses. In his first season as a starter after being two years removed from having the infamous Tommy John surgery, had a solid season and proved he was able to handle a full season’s workload as a starting pitcher. Making 32 starts with a record of 6-12 with an ERA of 3.58, 209 strikeouts, 1.068 WHIP in 146.0 innings.
The All-Star was even better when you get deeper into his Baseball Savant page its shocking Crochet didn’t receive any Cy Young votes for his effort. Ranking in the 99th percentile for his fastball run value (21), the 98th percentile for K percentage (35.1%), and the 93rd percentile for chase (33.5%) and whiff (33.1%), and extension (7.1ft). Being ranked that high for extension means the ball is getting on the hitters quicker which ups Crochets “perceived velocity”. So, Crochet’s fastball currently averages at 97.2mph, so with getting extended that far down the mound makes it look over a hundred.
The interview with Garrett Crochet
The 6’6″ lefty joined NESN’s Tom Caron at Fenway Fest and got candid with Caron about his feelings about being traded over to the Boston Red Sox. Crochet started by saying:
“Going back to last year’s trade deadline it was something that I’ve kind of been expecting, the writing was on the wall so to speak. I remember right when the offseason hit me and my wife were having the conversation of teams that could possibly be in the mix, and the one that jumped out to me was the Red Sox. It was something that we were hoping for. The idea of coming to Boston, to a young team that’s up and coming… this was number one on our list, and we’re just glad it worked out.”
Since joining the Boston Red Sox there have been rumblings that a possible contract extension could be in the works and that has finally been confirmed with Mass Lives Chris Cotillo that both the Red Sox and Crochet had open talks on a contract extension. Eagar to have a fresh start with the Boston Red Sox after having to be surrounded by misery last season with being on the worst team in Major League Baseball history, Crochet seems excited to join a Red Sox team poised to get back to their winning ways.
The Red Sox have done well so far with their moves given they haven’t spent money in so long. The last key to their puzzle would be to add another righty to their lineup in order to break up all those left-handed hitters they have in their lineup. If the Red Sox can ink to Crochet to an extension who is still under contract for this year and the next before becoming a free agent, they will be a force to be recon with in the NL East. Hopefully Garrett Crochet does well in Boston, and hopefully the haul the Chicago White Sox got back all pan out for them like top catching prospect Kyle Teel.
