The Chicago White Sox have a glut of young prospects who can all debut and contribute to the major league roster this season.
Most notable fans can expect to see top prospects, left-handers Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith who could fill in at the top of the Chicago White Sox rotation.
A few lesser-known Chicago White Sox prospects like George Wolkow are getting close to being major league-ready and could be big pieces for the White Sox shortly.
The Chicago White Sox towering outfielder
The 6-7 Wolkow was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the seventh round of the 2023 MLB June Amateur Draft from Downers Grove North HS in Downers Grove, IL. The recently turned 19-year-old (Jan. 11) has spent two seasons in the White Sox system reaching as high as Low-A last season. Last season between the two levels Wolkow had a great season from a power perspective mashing 13 HRs overall with 11 of them coming at Low-A. Wolkow also had career-highs so far in slugging percentage at .451) and average at .257.
The Illinois native recently attended Soxfest where he spoke to Scott Merkin of MLB.com and he told Merkin that he has the goal to hopefully debut with the White Sox by 21 years old.
“That would be pretty cool, and I have a lot of work to do. But I’m going to put the work in and try to make that happen,” Wolkow said Friday during SoxFest Live at the Ramova Theatre. “I want to debut as young as possible. I want to play as long as possible.
“So just being young doing that, it’s motivating. I really like being here today, being the youngest guy here, I wear that chip on my shoulder with pride. I love it.”
Wolkow also has a strong work ethic and a great mentality wanting to make his goal a reality by doing whatever he can to get better, but being humble enough to know that it will take time.
“A lot of learning. A lot of ups and downs,” said Wolkow of his ’24 campaign. “Last year I was really good at staying healthy all year, soaking up as much experience as I could. Really makes me excited for year two, just going through a lot of the learning experiences and having some failure to work through as well.
“Right now, I think just stay where my feet are day by day and continue to find something little to get better at every day. Over time, I’ll get to where I need to be.”
Wolkow could be a future power bat in the middle of the White Sox lineup one day given his huge frame. If he can come into his body and put more muscle on, he could potentially be a 30+ homerun player.
When could Wolkow get called up with the Chicago White Sox?
Given he only finished the season at Low-A last year and he is just 19 and isn’t considered a top prospect it will be some timeat before he is called up.
Wolkow has tremendous power with Baseball Savant grading it at 60/80 and an average fielder 50/80 and could be a solid corner outfield bat once he is with the White Sox.
For now, Wolkow will most likely start his season at either High-A or possibly Double-A.
