The Chicago White Sox are looking to be better than they were last season after setting the all-time loss record last season.
This season, the White Sox will look to play most, if not all, of their young prospects to see who can contribute to the future of the rebuild.
With that being the case, the White Sox let go of most of their old core players to help usher in this new era of White Sox baseball.

According to MLB Insider Robert Murray, former White Sox first baseman/outfielder Gavin Sheets has signed a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres.
“Free-agent first baseman/outfielder Gavin Sheets in agreement with the San Diego Padres on a minor-league contract, sources say. Sheets gets an invite to spring training.”

The 29-year-old Sheets was a former second-round pick of the White Sox back in 2017. Sheets was once a key contributor to the White Sox during their first rebuild. Sheets debuted for the White Sox in 2021, where he went 2-4 with 2 RBI against the Minnesota Twins.
Sheets appeared in just 54 games for the White Sox in 2021 and was supposed to be a part of a potential playoff-caliber team for years to come. Sadly, that did not happen, with the White Sox slowly entering into a second rebuild in ten years.
Sheets White Sox career

Since then, Sheets’ career with the White Sox spanned four seasons in which he played 435 games and had a career line of .230/.295/.385 for an OPS and OPS+ of .680 and 90. Sheets was essentially his career numbers in 2024, and with no signs of improving, he was seen as expendable to make room for the young guys. The White Sox ended up non-tendering Sheets a contract for this season after seeing no real growth from him at the plate or on defense.
A new chance with the Padres

Signing with the Padres should bring Sheets more opportunities and a better shot at making the major league roster.
Sheets will bring valuable depth for the Padres, who could use a backup option for both the outfield and at first behind Jake Cronenworth.
