White Sox lineup woes
The White Sox are averaging only 3.28 runs per game. The offense is not only significantly worse than last year’s lineup, which averaged 4.91 runs per game but it’s well below league average. The White Sox have some of the best hitters in the game led by Tim Anderson, Jose Abreu, and Yasmani Grandal but still, look hapless at the plate.
While Eloy Jimenez being injured certainly hurts the batting order, the lineup issues are much greater than that. For starters, the batting order is top-heavy. Outside of Abreu, Anderson, and Andrew Vaughn, nobody in the lineup has an on-base percentage (OBP) above .300, allowing opposing pitchers to eliminate the back half of the order with ease. In addition, only two batters (Anderson and Vaughn) have a slugging percentage (SLG) over .400, indicating the lineup not only is struggling to find good plate appearances but also struggling to make hard contact at the plate.
The hard contact is also a glaring issue considering the best hitter on the team is struggling. Abreu is only slugging .308 to start the season. While Abreu is expected to bounce back, the lineup is failing to find power at the heart of its order. Ultimately, opposing pitchers aren’t worried about a team that can’t get on base or create rallies and has hard contact to drive in runs.
