How Jimenez’s absence impacts roster
Instantly, the White Sox have to replace their cleanup hitter in the lineup. The lineup is already struggling, scoring only 15 runs in the seven-game losing streak, and now will be without a hitter that could comfortably knock-in Tim Anderson or Jose Abreu if they were on base. In addition to the hitting, the White Sox also have to replace their left fielder.
The fielding issue is the easier one for the White Sox to deal with, especially with AJ Pollock back in the lineup. The injury creates an everyday position for Andrew Vaughn in the outfield, who is looking to establish himself as a regular in the lineup. Vaughn also oddly enough, gives the White Sox a better fielding team as a more consistent option in left field.
The lineup issue is a greater one and also one that hurts the team in the long haul. Jimenez isn’t going to be easily replaced in the heart of the batting order. While Abreu and Yasmani Grandal can carry the middle of the order, the backend of the lineup suddenly looks weaker. Additionally, the team has to replace a slugger that has slashed .268/.314/.499 in his career with the power being a particularly tough thing to find.
The Jimenez injury is a tougher blow than the sweep itself. The White Sox have to make up games but now have to do so just as the roster is trying to find its footing. The injuries have particularly plagued the team to start the season. For the first time all season, the White Sox will have to navigate a long period without one of their most valuable everyday players.
