Major League Baseball has done a great job of marketing their product by playing games in places other than MLB stadiums. Over the years MLB has hosted games overseas in London and Japan as well as stadiums in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Fort Bragg in North Carolina and even TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.
But their latest announcement might just be the best yet.
On Thursday, MLB announced that the Chicago White Sox will take on the New York Yankees in Dyersville, Iowa at the site of the classic movie “Field of Dreams” on August 13th, 2020:
The game will be the first MLB game to be played on the classic field which is just over four hours away from Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.
“As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular season game to the site of Field of Dreams,” commissioner Rob Manfred said, according to MLB.com. “We look forward to celebrating the movie’s enduring message of how baseball brings people together at this special cornfield in Iowa.”
A 8,000-seat stadium will be built on-site to accommodate the game with construction beginning later this month.
