The Chicago Bears head coaching job is by far the most talked about by the national media prior to the regular season coming to a close this weekend. Names like Ben Johnson and Brian Flores have been big in the rumor mill as of late, but another possible candidate has entered the picture.
ESPN’s Chris Canty believes that Mike McCarthy would be the smart hire for the Chicago Bears
During a show on Friday, the former NFL defensive lineman mentioned that for the Chicago Bears and their fan base, sometimes it’s about getting the basics right on a head coaching hire and not always swinging for the fences.
“Bears fans don’t get it. Sometimes it’s not about the home run hire, it’s just about the base hit,” Canty said. “When it comes to your head coach, just go for the base hit. Bring in somebody that you know can do the job.”
Canty is referring to Johnson as the “home run hire” in this scenario for the Chicago Bears. The Detroit Lions offensive coordiantor is the darling of this head coaching cycle and is desired by every team that has an opening. Despite his impressive track record calling plays in the NFL, Canty still has his reservations about Johnson being an elite level head coach from the jump.
There’s no doubt that Ben Johnson is a guru when it comes to play designing and play calling, sequencing all those different things. But guess what? On top of that job, he would have the responsibility of being a head coach of the entire team, which absolutely is going to detract somewhat away from what his strength is, at least in the early goings of the job, until he learns how to be a head coach in the NFL.”
When looking at the end of this point from Canty, McCarthy already has that prior head coaching experience thanks to his stops in Green Bay and currently in Dallas. To make things even stronger in pushing for McCarthy, he has won a Super Bowl. Canty believes that even though McCarthy might not be the flashiest hire possible, the Chicago Bears would knoe exactly what they are getting from him.
“So yeah, maybe this should be about getting the base hit and not trying to swing for the fences when it comes to your head coaching hire. Go for somebody that you know can do the job. Mike McCarthy is a proven winner across multiple franchises, being in high profile gigs, and knowing how to get the best out of the quarterbacks while they were.”
The Chicago Bears are plenty familair with Mike McCarthy and his time with the Green Bay Packers. His partnership with quarterback Aaron Rodgers tortured the franchise for a very long time and won a championship while doing so.
One thing that fans can look at with McCarthy is how well he worked for Rodgers for an extended period of time. Having consistent success like the Packers did in his tenure as the head coach is something the Chicago Bears have been looking to have for a long time. Caleb Williams has mentioned in the past that Rodgers was a quarterback that he looked up to growing up. If McCarthy sees any bit of Rodgers in the incoming second year signal-caller, things might work out just fine if he ends up in the Windy City.
