The Chicago White Sox finished with the league’s worst record in 2024 at 141-121, and they’re not projected to be much better this season. General manager Chris Getz doesn’t appear hopeful that the talent on the current roster will make much of a push in 2025.
Per Cot’s Contracts, the White Sox have a $74.4 million projected 26-man payroll for the upcoming season. If the White Sox trade Luis Robert Jr., they’d rank dead last in the MLB for payroll at $59 million. (The Marlins have the second-lowest payroll at $69.4 million).
The payroll itself is foreshadowing plenty of numbers in the loss column this summer.
Chris Getz sees a cheap and evolving roster

Per Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, White Sox general manager Chris Getz said on Monday that the payroll is smaller this year after not picking up options for Eloy Jimenez and Yoan Moncada. Getz wants to see young talent develop this year on an “evolving” roster.
“So much of this, it’s a roster that’s evolving,” Getz said. “Younger players are going to get opportunities to see what they can do before we make a longer-term commitment that can perhaps hinder a younger player we feel can potentially be an impactful major league player.”
Getz said the White Sox have no plans to spend money until the team shows they’re close enough to winning that they need extra financial help to “take another step.”
The Chicago White Sox understand fans are frustrated

Getz, now in his second season as Chicago’s full-time GM, made it sound like he doesn’t think the team is worth the extra boost in elite labor for 2025, saying his only goal is to try to win more games than last season, not build a contender in the AL Central.
“We understand fans are frustrated and they want to see more wins on the field,” Getz said. “My job is to put together a club that can deliver more wins. I feel like once the wins come, the fans will attend. I also know fans enjoy watching baseball, especially when it warms up. When it does I think there will be a turnout. But in the meantime, we’re just focused on putting together the best team we can.”
The best team Getz can put toggle in 2025 doesn’t sound like a White Sox group worth watching.
