The Chicago Bears have added an additional weapon for head coach Ben Johnson’s offense. Chicago selected Michigan tight end Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
The former Michigan Wolverine is a dynamic pass-catcher and is expected to be a huge complement to Cole Kmet in a two-tight-end 12-personnel set. The newest addition to Chicago’s offense met with local media on Thursday night and revealed that Johnson said he reminds him of a Detroit Lions star.
The Chicago Bears wanted a new Sam LaPorta

In a post on X, ESPN’s Courtney Cronin has revealed that the Bears’ head coach told Loveland that he reminds him of 2023 Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta.
“Colston Loveland said that Ben Johnson told him that he reminds him “a lot” of Detroit tight end Sam LaPorta and expressed a desire to use him in the Bears offense similarly to how LaPorta was used for the Lions.”

Loveland also explained LaPorta is one of his favorite tight ends to watch in the NFL. It seems that Loveland could have mentioned LaPorta as a way to show Johnson that he is highly interested in playing for him in Chicago. It seems that the Michigan star has been angling to join the Bears since meeting with Johnson.
“Does Colston Loveland see any of Sam LaPorta’s game in himself?
“That’s what [Ben Johnson] told me after the meeting. They asked me who my favorite tight ends to watch were, and I put Sam LaPorta in there.”
Loveland said Johnson told him: “Yeah, you remind me a lot of him.”

Colston Loveland is an instant fit for Ben Johnson’s offense

The 6-foot-6 powerhouse has many similarities to LaPorta. Loveland is known for great route-running skills and is exceptional in the passing game. Loveland is an exceptional athlete and should be able to fit in Johnson’s system.
The Bears head coach was well known for utilizing two tight end sets frequently when calling plays in Detroit, and it looks like that will be the same way in Chicago.
It will be interesting to see how the Bears will utilize the 10th overall pick in 2025.
