The Chicago Cubs are bolstering their starting pitching depth by signing a player with a career 3.08 ERA in the minor leagues. Injuries to Shota Imanaga, Justin Steele, and Javier Assad have played factors as to why the organization is adding pitchers who can cover innings.

27 year old right-hander Tommy Romero has signed a minor league deal with the Cubs, according to his transaction page. The former 15th overall pick by the Seattle Mariners has just 8.1 career innings in the big leagues, with 4.2 coming with the Rays in 2022 and 3.2 with the Nationals that same year.

Throughout 652.1 minor league innings, most of Romero’s time on the mound has come as a starting pitcher, where he has a career 3.08 ERA. Romero began the 2025 season in the Mexican League, but now is returning to affiliated ball.

Where could Tommy Romero fit in with the Cubs?

Playing time at the big league level is anything but guaranteed for Romero and he will have to either play his way onto the team or be forced up due to injury. Seeing how he is just starting his Chicago tenure, he will be at the bottom of the pecking order, with several other options above him.

For now, Romero adds depth and insurance, which is a valuable asset in a long season where pitching needs can change quickly.
