The first indication thus far of the season that the future is here has come today, as the Cubs have called up infielder Junior Lake from Triple A Iowa. In a corresponding move, outfielder Brian Bogusevic was placed on the 15 Day DL.
Lake started the season on the DL, but after being activated and sent to Iowa, he hit .295 with four HR and 18 RBI. He also stole 14 bases in 40 games. While these numbers may be a bit inflated from playing in the hitter friendly Pacific Coast League, Lake has still shown much promise at the ripe age of 23.
Lake has played a few games at outfield for the Iowa Cubs as well this season.
He has also been known to have a great glove and is very versatile in the field. He is listed as a shortstop, but can also play third base and the corner outfield spots. He is expected to play some third base and outfield against left handers and may even be the replacement for Alfonso Soriano or Nate Schierholtz if they are traded.
This is a move towards the future for the Cubs and will show us if Lake is here to stay.
