The day Chicago Cubs fan have been waiting for since the beginning of the season has finally arrived. According the multiple sources, the Cubs have called up their top prospect, first basemen Anthony Rizzo and he will make his Cubs debut Tuesday Night against the New York Mets.
The Cubs acquired Rizzo, 22, this past off season from the San Diego Padres for pitcher Andrew Cashner. Rizzo appeared in 49 games for the Padres last year but batted just .141. However, the Cubs believe some extra preparation this year in Triple A Iowa has prepared him to have much more success this time at the major league level.
The call up of Rizzo has been looming for quite some time now. On Saturday, the Cubs and Rizzo passed the deadline for Rizzo’s free agency time. If the Cubs would have brought him up before Saturday, Rizzo would’ve been eligible for free agency in 2017. But now, Rizzo won’t become a free agent until 2018.
In 69 games for Iowa, Rizzo batted .345 with 23 home runs, 62 RBIs, and a 1.110 OPS. Rizzo will be facing Mets stater, RHP Dillon Gee. Gee is 5-5 with a 4.27 ERA. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 CST.
