The Chicago Cubs received some good news following Monday’s 12-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates and it had nothing to do with the game itself.
Catcher Willson Contreras appears close to returning to the Cubs team according to manager Joe Maddon.
The skipper was asked about Contreras in the postgame press conference and offered this to say via CSN Chicago:
“He’s really close,” manager Joe Maddon said. “That’s pretty much it – the fact that they’re comfortable with the leg. Just the fact that the docs and the training staff are comfortable with him running to the point that if he ran in the game, he’s not going to hurt himself. So this is pretty much the last step.”
Contreras has been out since August 9 when he suffered a hamstring injury in a 3-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The Cubs have used Alex Avila, newly acquire Rene Rivera and Victor Caratini in his absence.
Chicago is coming off a 6-1 home stand but has now lost two in a row. They currently hold a 3.5 game lead on the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.
Contreras was the Cubs best hitter at the time of his injury, starting the second half scorching hot.
Adding his bat back into the lineup gives it a boost as they look to close out September strong.
