After Justin Wilson blew a save opportunity in Tuesday’s first game of a doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers, many wondered why Joe Maddon didn’t go to closer Brandon Morrow in that spot.
Following the 4-3 loss, Maddon answered that question and revealed that Morrow had injured his back and the back spasms were flaring up again. The Cubs were able to win the second game in extra innings but on Wednesday, they received some big news regarding Morrow.
The team has placed him on the 10-day DL retroactive to June 17th, meaning they will be without their closer for at least a week.

The Cubs corresponding move was to keep Justin Hancock on the roster as he was added for the doubleheader on Tuesday.
In 26 appearances this year, Morrow has posted a 1.59 ERA with 16 saves and a WHIP of 1.147. He’s been one of the best pitchers in the Cubs bullpen all season long and now they will likely go to a closer by committee for the next week or so.
