According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs have declined Jeff Samardzija’s 2012 three-million dollar option. However, Samardzija is expected to be re-signed to a reduced salary. Samardzija is not eligible for arbitration or free agency and teams can cut a player’s salary by 20 percent from the previous year. He will make the team out of spring training, either as a starter or as a relief pitcher.
As reports have mentioned, Samardzija is expected to be considered for a starting job next season.
The Cubs signed Jeff Samardzija to a five-year deal in 2007, which included options for both 2012 and 2013. It was a major league deal worth $10 million.
All in all, this move just saves the Cubs a little bit of money, not much though. He will return.
