After a 2-0 lose the previous night the Cubs were looking to get their bats going against Aj Burnett and the Pirates. Jeff Samardzija took the hill for the Cubs as he has been dominant as of late. However he didn’t have his best stuff today.
The Pirates got to Samardzija in the second inning. Garret Jones doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a Russel martin groundout which then brought up a Cub killer, Pedro Alvarez. Alvarez singled to center to drive in jones and give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. The pirate scored again in the top of the third as Travis Snider singled in Starling Marte to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
The Cubs couldn’t get their bats going against Aj Burnett who was baffling Cub hitters all day. The Pirates extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth on a Pedro Alvarez two run homer. Samrdzija finished the day going six innings and allowing four earned runs.
The Pirates would add on in the top of the eighth on a two run homer by Russell Martin off of Hector Rondon. That made it 6-0 Pirates. The Cubs got their two runs on a Alfonso Sorianio two run homer in the ninth, and that proved to be the final score, 6-2.
The Cubs will look to salvage a game tomorrow as they face Jeff Locke (5-1, 2.45 ERA). The Cubs will send out a struggling Edwin Jackson(1-8, 6.29 ERA). First pitch is set for 1:20 central time.
