The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirtaes 1-0 thanks to a strong outing by starter Matt Garza. Like usual, Garza got very little run support but he got the one run he needed.
Garza continued to be the Cubs most consistent pitcher, going seven shutout innings allowing just four hits and striking out seven. He did not allow a run for the fourth time this season. Unlike on Tuesday, when they scored eight runs before they’d made an out in the third, the Cubs didn’t score until the eighth inning on Wednesday.
Starlin Castro led off the eighth with a solo home run to left center off Pirates reliever Chris Resop. Castro was 3-for-4 on the evening, adding two singles to the home run. It was his third straight three-hit game. The last Cub to knock three base hits in three consecutive games was Derrek Lee on April 13-16, 2008. Castro has had three or more hits in 18 games this season, which is the most in the National League.
Manager Mike Quade and right fielder Tyler Colvin were ejected in the fifth inning after Colvin appeared to argue with home plate umpire Bob Davidson on a called strike three.
The Cubs will go for the sweep Thursday. Lopez will take the ball for the Cubs against McDoanld. The chances for a five game winning streak are in the Cubs favor, as their offense is hitting .344 vs the McDonald.
