Charlie Morton entered Wednesday with an 0-5 record and the worst ERA in all of baseball. The Cubs figured with Ted Lilly on the mound they couldn’t lose 2 games in a row to the Bucs. That’s exactly what happened. Leave it to the Chicago Cubs to make the worst pitcher in the National League to look like the 2nd coming of Cy Young.
The Cub offense should have lit up the scoreboard but they only mustered 5 hits off of the Pirates. Chicago didn’t take a single walk the entire game.
Morton lowered his ERA to 10.30 and allowed both Cub runs in his 6 innings of work allowing RBIs by Aramis Ramirez and Mike Fontenot. Ramirez has been in the worst slump of his career. He finished with just the 1 hit.
Ted Lilly allowed all 4 runs in his 6 innings. Lilly has only made 3 starts this year and hasn’t settled in to his usual self. It’s only May 5th but the Cubs are quickly falling out of contention in the NL Central.
The Cubs will look to take at least 1 game against Pittsburgh tomorrow night when they’ll send Randy Wells to the mound to stop the bleeding. Brian Burres (1-1) will pitch for the Pirates.
