I’m going to do my best to sum up the Cubs minor league games each night. What I need though is the names of players we want to keep track of. Clearly, nobody cares about the random organizational left fielder wasting away in AA, but I cannot claim to know all the prospects right now either. If there is a name you think should be in the report each day, go ahead and tell me.
Iowa Cubs (AAA)- Beat Tacoma 7-3
Keep your eye on Austin Bibens-Dirkx, not just for his hilarious name, but also for his solid pitching. He went six innings last night, and allowed three earned runs on five hits and one walk. He had five strikeouts, and hasn’t lost a game yet since he was promoted to AAA, his AAA ERA is now 2.42. Jeff Stevens tossed a perfect inning of relief as well.
Darwin Barney went 3-5 with 2 RBI and a triple. He played shortstop yesterday, and figures to be called up if/when the Cubs and get rid of either Mike Fontenot or Jeff Baker.
Tennessee Smokies (AA)- Beat Huntsville 9-2
Chris Carpenter, perhaps the second best pitching prospect for the Cubs still in the minors, pitched six shutout innings for the win. He allowed just three hits and two walks against eight strikeouts. His season ERA is now 3.03, and while he is probably too far down the depth chart to get a chance this season, don’t forget about him. Carpenter also went 2-3 with 2 RBI at the plate, so he had quite the night.
Brett Jackson was playing center field and went 2-4 with a double and a walk.
Tony Thomas (2B) went 2-3 with a double and two RBI. He’s certainly a name to keep an eye on, he has a .833 OPS this season.
Daytona Cubs (High-A)- Lost to Jupiter 4-2
Brooks Raley got the start last night for Daytona, and he went six and two-thirds innings. He allowed one run on five hits and a walk, but did also manage to strikeout six.
D.J. LeMahieu, second round pick last year, went 2-4. He’s hitting .302 this season, but doesn’t have much in the way of OBP (.335) or SLG (.373).
Junior Lake (SS) went 1-3.
Peoria Chiefs (Low-A)- Lost to Quad Cities 9-8
Newly acquired Brett Wallach got his second start as part of the Cubs’ organization, he did not pitch well at all. Three and a third innings pitched, seven runs (four earned) with four walks. He only allowed three hits, but clearly his command is his biggest issue.
Hak-Ju Lee (SS) went 1-6.
Logan Watkins (2B) went 2-4 with a stolen base.
Jae-Hoon Ha (RF) went 2-4 with two RBI. He’s another name to keep an eye on, he’s hitting .301 this year, but his OBP (.325) will need some work.
Boise Hawks (Rookie)- Forfeit
Seriously, I guess the field was too wet in the mind of the Hawks, and rather than play on it, they forfeited the game.
AZL Cubs- Suspended Game, losing 2-1 to AZL Brewers
Only person of note here is 2010 second round pick Reggie Golden, who is 0-3 with three strikeouts.

I think we should keep a tab on Chris Archer in AA. Pitcher that went to my HS a couple years before I graduated. Apparently he’s moving up the ranks pretty quickly.
