Once again, the Chicago offense forgot to show up. This time against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark. Jeff Samardzija was sharp, but when you can’t get a player across home plate, you lose. The Cubs lost 1-0 vs. the Reds and lost the series 2-1. Now the Cubs record stands at 6-14.

Reds 6th inning: Todd Frazier hit a solo-home run to center-field. Cubs 0, Reds 1.

The good: There’s not much good when your team gets shutout. But you have to give Samardzija his props for keeping the Cubs in the game. Besides the mistake of giving up a solo-home run to Frazier, that ultimately won the game, Samardzija was on his game. Going 6 innings, giving up 7 hits, 1 earned run, 3 walks and struck out 8.
The bad: Anthony Rizzo did get a hit off the best lefty reliever in the game during the 9th inning, but that was his only hit of the series. Rizzo was 1-15 in the series with 5 strikeouts.
The ugly: The Cubs could not hit Latos all day and had no offense on the day. The Cubs has 5 hits on the day, 4 off Latos and 1 off Chapman. 1 extra base hit (double by Julio Borbon) and 4 singles.
Note: Matt Garza’s rehab-stint was pushed back due to a dead arm. He’s expected to throw a bullpen session in the coming days.
Tomorrow the Cubs will start a 4-game series with the Miami Marlins in Miami. The game starts at 6:05 p.m. central and can be seen on WCIU and heard on WGN 720. Edwin Jackson will try to get his first win in a Cubs uniform once again and Kevin Slowey will be on the hill for the Marlins.
