Coming off of a series win in D.C. the Cubs were looking to come home and build off of some much needed momentum. The Cubs got a three game home series started with Rockies as Travis Wood took the mound for the Cubs and Juan Nicasio took the bump for the Rox.
The Cubs got to Nicasio early . David Dejesus led off the Cubs first with a double into the right field corner. Castro and Rizzo were both retired which then brought up Alfonso Soriano. Soriano wasted no time as he deposited a 1-0 pitch onto Waveland to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.
The Cubs kept the momentum from the first inning and kept on pilling the runs on in the second. Wellington Castillo hit a one out double, and then advance to third on Darwin Barney groundout to shortstop, which then brought up Travis Wood. Wood being a pitcher wields the bat pretty well. Wood drilled a 2-0 pitch into the left center field gap to score Castillo and give the Cubs a 3-0 lead. After the Wood double Dejesus walked on four pitches to bring up Starlin Castro. Castro flared a 1-0 pitch down the right field line for a two RBI double to give the Cubs a 5-0 lead.
Travis Wood became the second cubs pitcher in history to begin the season with eight straight quality starts. The other Cubs pitcher to do it, Hippo Vaughn in 1919. Wood pitched seven scoreless innings while only allowing two hits and three walks.
The Cubs would add two more in the seventh on a two RBI triple by Nate Schierholtz, and then they added two more in the eighth on a Dejesus two RBI single. The Cubs currently lead the MLB in doubles, and they tallied 8 extra base hits in the victory today.
The Rockies got their only run on a Josh Rutledge solo home run in the ninth off of Carlos Marmol. Travis wood picked up the W to give him a 4-2 mark on the year. The Cubs will look to keep their bats hot tomorrow as they face Jeff Francis (1-3, 6.90 ERA). The Cubs will send Carlos Villanueva(1-2, 3.02 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is set for 7:05 central time.
