The Chicago Cubs made a few moves at baseball’s annual Winter Meetings a few weeks ago but they might not be done.
According to reports, the reigning World Series champs are showing interest in free agent pitcher Tyson Ross. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe first reported that the Cubs seem the most interested in the free agent starter.
Here’s what Cafardo reported:
Teams are evaluating how much of a health risk Ross is. Ross earned $9.6 million last season — when he pitched just one game and had surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome — and was headed to arbitration before he was non-tendered by San Diego Dec. 2. The Cubs seem the most interested, but smaller-market teams such as Pittsburgh, Miami and Arizona may be in the hunt, as well as Texas and Houston.
The 29-year-old Ross will be looking for $9-11 million per year in a multi-year deal according to Evan Grant. Chicago will have competition for the pitcher as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Texas Rangers are reportedly interested.
Chicago said goodbye to starter Jason Hammel this offseason, a move that will benefit both sides. They will enter 2017 with Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, Jake Arrieta and John Lackey in their rotation with the fifth spot up for grabs.
Lefty reliever Mike Montgomery could challenge for that spot with Ross, if the Cubs decide to bring him in.
