Seattle — Seattle continued their winning streak Tuesday night despite only scoring on one play. The one mistake made by Cubs starter Ryan Dempster (5-6) all night. Franklin Gutierrez hit a two run homer in the 2nd, but that’s all Jason Vargas (6-2) would need as he shut out the Cubs with 7 innings of 4 hit baseball.
Ryan Dempster pitched almost as well going the distance pitching all 8 innings allowing just the two runs on 5 hits while striking out 8. The Cubs actually out hit Seattle 6 to 5, led by Alfonso Soriano’s 3 hits. Marlon Byrd added a pair as well.
Seattle’s winning streak climbed to 5 games despite only scoring a total of 11 runs in those affairs, relying on great starting pitching again. Former Cub David Aardsma picked up his 16th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
In other news Carlos Silva (hamstring) will not face his old team Thursday as his start has been pushed back. Ted Lilly will move up to start in his place. With Monday’s day off Lilly is still going on regular rest.
