According to Danny Valencia’s twitter, the Cubs have signed infielder Matt Tolbert. Valencia was Matt Tolbert’s teammate on the Minnesota Twins. Bruce Levine reports today the Cubs have in fact signed Matt Tolbert to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.
Matt Tolbert, who will turn 30 in May is a switch hitting infielder. Tolbert has only played for one team in his career and that is the Minnesota Twins. He made his major debut on April 1st, 2008. In his career, Tolbert has a .230 average, 3 home runs and has driven in 54 runs.
I wouldn’t look anything into this move, but minor league depth and an injury replacement. But you never know … a player can shine in spring training and be a surprise to make the team. We did see that in Tyler Colvin.
The rest of the non-roster invitees to spring training are expected to be announced next week.
