After a 1-5 road trip, the Cubs were looking forward to some home cookin’. While they did play at Wrigley, their sloppy play followed them.
Ted Lilly (1-3) was looking to rebound from an awful start in Pittsburgh. Lilly pitched well for the most part, but it was a 2 run homer in the 7th by Florida catcher Ronny Paulino that spoiled what was a quality start. The Marlins added an insurance run later in the inning when Cody Ross stole home on a double steal.
Carlos Zambrano overcame an error by Starlin Castro (his 3rd of the game) and pitched a scoreless 8th. Alfonso Soriano gunned down Hanley Ramirez (who ran the stop sign from his 3rd base coach) to save a run. Carlos Marmol saw some action and struck out the side and showcased his nasty slider.
Lilly was only given 2 runs of support from the woeful offense. The only Cub who contributed was Soriano who had 3 hits with both Cub RBIs. Starlin Castro went 0-2 with 2 walks.
The Cubs (14-19) are now 5 games below .500 and will look to turn things around tomorrow night. Randy Wells (3-1) will also look to put his last start behind him and propel the Cubs to a win. Former Cub Ricky Nolasco (2-2) will pitch against his former club for the Marlins (15-17).
