Reports came in early Wednesday evening from their beat reporter Carrie Muskat that Rick Renteria has been hired as the next Cubs manager. Ever since the Cubs were denied permission to interview Torey Lovullo, Renteria seemed to be the obvious choice. He fits the Cubs needs of a bilingual manager. He has been the Padres bench coach for the past three seasons and has also worked in their minor league system while Jed Hoyer was the general manager. Renteria served as the manager for the Mexico in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. A teleconference will be held tomorrow.
The suspected holdup for the hiring was that Renteria was unable to travel until the last couple of days because of hip surgery he recently had. He is still not completely healthy, hence why they are holding a teleconference.
Renteria has a great baseball IQ and is well liked and well respected throughout the game of baseball. His only cause for concern may be that his laid back personality might not work well with the team and media. However, it is not seen as a big issue.
According to Bob Nightengale of USAToday, the contract will be for three years with two option years.
